Red, White and Blue - Remembering a Hero

You hear the word "hero" and different images come to mind.  Today I watched a dear friend say goodbye to her brother, a true hero, who lost his life in the line of duty in Afghanistan on Saturday.   Today, I watched a wife be handed our flag.  I watched three beautiful children stare in awe at a sea of red, white and blue, unable to comprehend the deepness of their loss.  I watched my dear, sweet friend summon the strength to speak of the brother she loved so much and mourn a future that will never be.  My heart broke for this family and for the thousands of families who came before.  I can not fathom the depths of their grief, the extent of their pain.  All I can do is share his story.

Take a moment read the articles below and remember Sergeant First Class Daniel Metcalfe.  Think of all those serving and who have served, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.  Let's not forget that we are still fighting; that everyday men and women are risking their lives for this great country of ours.  Let's remember that our freedom is not free.

Please keep this grieving family in your thoughts and prayers.   If you are so inclined, donations in his honor may be sent to Patriot Guard Riders, 6399 Lake Ave, Williamson, NY 14589 or Blue Star Mothers NY 1 at PO Box 426, Bloomfield, NY 14469.
