Style Me May

DeanStreetSociety

This month I teamed up with Hilary Rushford of Dean Street Society for her instagram style challenge #StyleMeMay.  It was so much fun!  One of my biggest challenges every morning is deciding what to wear, so having a little style inspiration goes a long way - not to mention that knowing you''ll be posting a picture of your outfit every days gives you some added incentive to get it together.  Ha!

 DeanStreetSociety

I'm sure it comes as no surprise that I have a little blogger crush on Hillary; between the bangs, the clothes, the theatre background, and her having my dream career - it was destine to happen.  If you aren't familiar with Hilary and Dean Street Society - you have to check it out...anyone who signs their posts "with grace and gumption" is a good egg in my book.  This girl is fan-tastic and one of my favorite blogger/stylist/brooklynites period.

Here was the challenge:

Here I am in some of my favorite #StyleMeMay looks:

Who is your favorite blogger when it comes to style inspiration?  Please share below!

Throwback Thursday: Prom 2000

Ah prom season, a time of year that always makes me nostalgic.  While today high school girls look like mini Kardsashians and pop princesses with perfect makeup and hair... back in the day we didn't look so, well, perfect.

The year was 2000 - "The Thong Song" and "Big Pimpin'" were played, eyebrows were over-plucked, and I rocked a lavender gown with embroidered violets on it.  Oh yes, I was fancy.

I went with my best friend, Nick, who passed away in 2005.  He will be gone eight years in July and I still miss him every. single. day.

Love you, buddy.
The Girls
Looking at this picture, I just realized that all of our dates were either in college or didn't go to our school.
I guess we were pretty cool.  I'm sure we thought so.  Ha!
A page out of my high school scrapbook (literally)
Now, I'm not sure if you know this, but in Jersey, after prom you go down the shore.  And that's what you say:  "I'm going down the shore."  You don't care that it isn't English; you say it and you say it with pride.  I am happy to report and even after Hurricane Sandy the Jersey Shore is once again open for business.  Natural disasters might be tough - but want to know what's tougher?  New Jersey.

"Stronger than the Storm."
                                            "Jersey Strong."

They say:  "you can take the girl out of Jersey, but you can't take the Jersey out of the girl" and they are right.  I can't wait to go back and visit this summer.

Good Old Seaside Heights.  So many memories!
So many bad decisions that thankfully didn't get any of us into any serious trouble.  ;)

I know it wasn't that long ago, but I'm glad we grew up when we did.  Just think of how much trouble we would have gotten ourselves into if social media was around back then!  Yowzah!  I shudder at the thought.

Maybe I had bad brows and questionable taste in formal wear, but I grew up in a great town, with great friends, and tons of fantastic memories that I will treasure forever!

What about you?  Any fabulous prom memories?  Or better yet, embarrassing photos that you'd like to share?

xoxo

PS- My apologies to anyone who finds themselves included in this post - I'm happy to say that much like fine wine, we've all improved with age.  Ha!

Wannabe Pinup Girl

I've always loved vintage and vintage-inspired clothing and I've been dying to wear new retro cherry dress from Anthropologie.  Good thing the hubs took me out for a nice birthday dinner sans kiddos!  I even had my hair styled in 1940s curls for the occasion.

Here is how it all came together:

Hair:  Jordan at Beau Monde Salon and Spa in Victor NY
Kenneth Cole sunnies
Hi There from Karen Walker Cereja Dress via Anthropologie
GAP clutch
Nine West shoes
Anthropologie bracelet, Francesca's earrings,  and Michael Kors watch

What do you think?  Loving the bombshell look?  Or too over-the-top?

Happy Memorial Day!

Just had our "kick off to summer" cookout in the backyard...Thankfully the weather warmed up enough for a little BBQ.

We had enough food for about 15 people, even though it was just the four of us.

Even if today is the unofficial kick off to summer, it's also a day of remembrance, gratitude, and sacrifice.

Take a minute to think about why we have today off  - about the men, women, and the families of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. We too often forget that our freedom isn't free.
Two of my favorite men in uniform:
My pop-pop (WWII) and my grandpa (Korea)
So on this Memorial Day and always God bless the US military - fallen heroes, active servicemen and women, families and friends. We honor you today. Thank you for all you do seen and unseen for all of us.

Hope you spent your long weekend with those you love best and say a silent prayer for those who could not.  God bless.

xoxo

Put Your Best Face Forward this Spring with a Sweet Retreat (Guest Post)

Becoming a mother is the most significant experience in the lives of many women. And while the joyous journey is certainly worthwhile, it is not lacking in its share of challenges. As a mom of three, I know I spend all of my energy making sure my children’s needs never go unattended. While my role as mama matters to me more than anything in the world, that doesn’t mean I don’t find myself struggling with stress while trying to balance our daily routine with healthy lifestyle habits. And I know I’m not alone! Between packing lunches, sports practices, extra-curricular activities, grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and the billion other things we all do everyday, it is no wonder we feel overwhelmed.

With the constant juggling act of being a mom, we all need to take some to reflect on self-care and relaxation. While celebrating the fifth annual National Pregnancy Month this spring, we have the chance to remind every mom in our lives about the importance of not only caring for loved ones, but also caring for ourselves. By sharing wisdom and carving out personal time, we can all lead healthier, happier lives. It's been a learning experience, but I know that I am a better mother when I am the best version of myself.

In order to get the best me, I enjoy not only relaxing my mind but also treating my skin. On a previous trip to Hawaii at Honolulu's decadent Kahala Hotel & Resort, I was treated to a day at the spa. While the ingredients used were simple, the result was a revelation. After one extraordinary facial mask treatment, I felt refreshed, rejuvenated, and ready to embrace quality time with my kids.
Inspired by that fabulous face mask I had enjoyed on at one of Honolulu’s top hotels, I have recreated this Coconut and Pineapple Face Mask from the comfort of my own home!

How to make the Coconut and Pineapple Mask from your home:

  • 2 tbs coconut milk
  • 4 slices of fresh pineapple
  • a blender or food processor
  • a bowl
First, place the pineapple in a blender or food processor and add the coconut milk.  Blend until smooth. Next, remove the mask with a rubber spatula and place in a jar for easy transportation from the kitchen to your chosen relaxation destination. After applying the creamy concoction to my face, I relax for 20 minutes to allow my skin to absorb the vitamins and rich enzymes. Finally, wash with warm water.
This experience is a calm retreat during a hectic day, and has since become a go-to for stressful days.  Now, you too can feel renewed and re-energized after a stressful day. Just whip up a Coconut and Pineapple Mask and reclaim some valuable "me time."

Back to Back Fab

Life has been so crazy lately!  I feel like I need to play catch up here at le blog to let you guys know what's been going on.

I had two pretty great weekends in a row.

May 4th I hopped on the train to NYC for one of my best high school friend's bachelorette parties.

Obviously this meant I needed a blow out...

Enjoying a deep conditioning treatment at Wayne Agassi Salon in Brooklyn, while my friends went to an exercise class...suckers!

Brooklyn does a nice blow out!

Love these girls!

Subway/Penn Station
It wouldn't be right to NOT get a slice of NYC pizza - definitely one of the things I miss the most.
This past weekend I rocked my best twenties fashion at Gatsby.
I think this is a good look for me...
Clearly I need to go to a Roaring Twenties theme party...
Somebody make that happen... ok?
I loved it.
One of my favorite novels paired with one of my favorite directors.
What's not to love?
In between I had a yard sale and saw Les Miserables...

Life has been good:  busy, but good.

This week proved challenging as well: my personal shopping business is busier than ever, I had two sick kids, a salon visit, Rochester A-List event, Dado fashion show, planned the first ever Rochester Blogger Network event, and still need to pack for next week.  Ah you know what they say - "eat when you're old, sleep when you're dead..."  Let's just hope this schedule doesn't kill me!  Ha!

Off to Michigan next week for a return visit to Kaufman Children's Center for some intense therapy for my boys.  Not sure if I'll be able to sneak any blog time in or not... just going to have to play it by ear.  I do have a fab DIY beauty guest post lined up and will try to pop in at least once... stay tuned!

xoxo
