Kelly Kapowski

Just a quick rant today.

I was at the mall last night in search of something to wear for my 30th birthday bash and was in awe of the crappy 90s throwbacks that were filling the racks at every turn.  Some 90s trends I'm ok with, like colored skinny jeans (granted the last time I wore them they were Bongo and a size 00 extra long but lets not talk about that ok?)  Super.  Thanks.  And neon is also great (in moderation).

Not this.

But crop tops?  Denim vests?  Pallazzo pants?  Coolots?  Really?  How about I froof my bangs a la Kelly Kapowski, spray on alittle CK1, grab my tomagotchi and Ace of Base mix tape and head on over to the Roller Rink for Skate Night!?!  Ugh!

I'm pretty sure she bought this outfit at Forever 21 yesterday...

The nineties were bad enough the first time.  They were like the 80s annoying little brother; trying to be cool, but ending up just a cheap imitation.

What's next?  Mood rings?  Parachute pants?  Pagers?  No Fear t-shirts?  Snap bracelets? Scrunchies?

I'm starting to regret giving away my Surfstyle windbreaker, my Charlotte Hornets Starter jacket, my Doc Martens, and my entire 5-7-9 wardrobe.  If only I kept that necklace with my name (then spelled "Jennie" so I could be cool like Jennie Garth) written on a grain of rice, or my black Jansport with Grateful Dead bear patches, or my purple and teal Umbro shorts.
Me circa 1993
Please enjoy the high wasted jeans and scrunchie.
Me circa 1996
For your viewing pleasure
the only time you will see me in
a crop top and cut offs.
Sigh.  I guess its time to dig out the New Kids on the Block lunchbox, watch some Clarissa Explains It All, and snort a pixi stick, because like it or not the 90s are back.  Don't believe me?  Pop on over to Eastview and see for yourself.

Enough of my [not so quick after all] rant.  How do you feel about the return of 90s fashions?  Does it smell like Teen Spirit?  Or just plain stink?

  2. Amazing. I guess I'm returning that crop top I bought for your birthday bash. Definitely witnessed a hot pink crop top with parachute pants on 57th street today. Not sure if I was more annoyed by her fashion sense or 6 pack abs.

PS - "I saw the sign and it opened up my eyes" to terrible throwbacks.

  4. Oh my goodness. This '90s throwback stuff is killin' me. I can deal with most of it, but the crop tops with high-waisted shorts are the limit for me. Ugh, I hate that so much!

...Although with that said, I'm gonna go watch Saved by the Bell on Netflix. :)

    1. I was OBSESSED with Saved by the Bell - my mom used to tape it for me because it was on while I had cheering practice! So in love with Zack Morriis!

  5. I take a positive view of the entire 90's retro fashion trend - nobody will make fun of my high school photos for a while because now the kids have their own set of horrible photos to hide.

  6. At least the fashion is still in the early 90's. Just wait until the kids start dressing in grunge again. Holey jeans and baggy flannel shirts is not a look I'm interested in seeing again!

  7. OH. MY. GOD.

I totally had a windbreaker, a Starter jacket, and the Umbro shorts. Oh, and remember how people rolled their jeans? Or was that the 80s...I get confused. :)

I also had a rockstar neon green NKOTB lunchbox...and NKOTB socks...and a NKOTB sleeping bag.

    Don't judge.

    1. How could I judge when I was sleeping on NKOTB sheets?
